CHAPTER 5

Seren walked briskly out of the cafeteria, looking to see if eyes were following her. She didn’t need to be concerned because everyone was fixated on the embarrassing circus that Clyde and his gang started up with the poor couple. They were now fully dressed while students exited the cafeteria.

The lead guard locked eyes with Clyde and a staring match ensued. The guards knew who was responsible. After about a half minute, the guard looked away, defeated.

“All right everybody, move away! There’s nothing to see here!”

Outside in the hall, Seren looked around for Glenn, walking slowly. About fifteen feet away she heard a soft whistle. Looking in the direction of the sound, she saw Glenn standing against the wall, quietly looking down at her.

“Hi, you wanted to see me?”

Glenn stood up and became a half foot taller. Seren looked up at him.

“I’m Glenn,” he said but didn’t extend his hand.

“I’m Seren. Pleased to meet you.”

“I know who you are.”

“How-how do you know? We’ve never met.”

“Never mind that. I just want you to know that there may be trouble soon. And you will be involved in it.”

Seren’s heart started beating rapidly, a fight or flight response. This was her first day at Cappella Academy and she had seen more already than she was comfortable with.

“Who are those guys you’re with? One of them helped me on the way to school. His name is Clyde?”

Glenn spat.

“Yeah. You can say he’s the leader. We all hang out together but – “

Seren’s mind was racing. Although she felt afraid, she felt comfortable around Glenn. He didn’t get involved with the others in the cafeteria fiasco, and there was something calming about him. Seren got a good look at Glenn. His shoulders and chest were immensely broad, and he looked very strong and capable. He wore a goatee which framed his face nicely. There was no doubt he was classically handsome, and then some.

“But what?”

“Look, Seren, there’s some shit going down soon. And it’s bad. Clyde did a good deed this morning catching you, but it’s not what it seems.”

“I don’t understand, Glenn.”

“Stay away from him, because ---”

“There you are, Glenn! You went to pee and missed all the fun! Did everything come out okay with that?”

It was Clyde, making a joke. The three walked toward Glenn and Seren.

“Yeah, fine.”

“Ah, look at her! The damsel in distress from this morning. How are you doing on your first day, Seren?”

“Okay, I guess.”

“Great. Sorry about that little bit of fun in the cafeteria. Bradley owed me something, and he didn’t come through.”

Seren looked at Clyde silently. She suppressed her rage and managed to stay calm. The other two came up and stood on either side of Clyde.

“In this world, Seren, all a man has is his word. And Bradley isn’t a man of his word.”

Seren stepped back as suddenly a look of red rage passed over Clyde’s face. Then, it was gone as quickly as it came.

“Anyway, I don’t believe you’ve been introduced. This is Demeter to my left and Roth on my right.
